Using Your Imagination to Gain Resources
Have you ever had a problem or noticed a block in your thinking and didn’t know how to get yourself out of it?
Have you ever wondered how other people are able to gain perspective on their problems easily? Here are a few tips to help you get some perspective and loosen the grip you might have on a problem.
Imagine a minor problem you’re experiencing. What picture do you have in your head as you think about it? Imagine it, and as you do, make it so you see your body in the picture; make the picture dark and small like a postage stamp. Now imagine the picture moving all the way to the other side of the room until it is just a tiny picture you can’t even make out anymore. Notice that the feelings you were having are less intense, or you may not be experiencing them at all anymore. This will give you additional resources to find solutions, instead of getting caught up in what might be happening.
Are there any voices in the picture? Like your voice or another person’s voice? Are you hearing something being said to you, or are you saying something to yourself? As you imagine hearing this voice, change it so it sounds just like Mickey Mouse. Listen to what was being said to you, but this time imagine it being said in that funny voice. This will make you giggle, and release the negativity from those words.
Simply imagining the representation you have of a problem in your head in a different way will make the meaning of it change. When we think about things, we make pictures in our heads. Accompanying the picture may be sounds, feelings, and sometimes self talk. By using your imagination to manipulate this Internal Representation inside your head, you’ll have more resources to deal with the problem. In some cases, this trick can make a minor problem completely disappear. Imagine if you were feeling nervous about having a talk with a critical superior at work. Wouldn’t it be easier if you were able to release the negative feelings you were having about it? How much more calm would you feel going into that discussion? The person will probably still be critical, but you’ll notice you are able to deal with them a lot easier when you go into your meeting with a light hearted demeanour, rather than nervousness or fear.
This technique uses some basic principles of NLP to allow you to change the way you feel about a situation simply by changing the representation you have of it in your mind.
