The Role of the Conscious Mind
What’s the role of the Conscious Mind?
“If you don’t give your Unconscious Mind something to do, someone else will.”
Your Unconscious Mind (UM) – that part of your mind that is responsible for all the things that you’re not consciously aware of, including beating your heart, working your lungs, you emotions, all your memories and the acquisition of your goals – is like the family pet. Its an obedient loyal friend who just needs some clear directions in order of function and succeed.
Now, from before you are even born, your Unconscious Mind got very clear instructions to run your body, and keep you safe among other things, which is why you don’t have to think about pumping your blood, or working your kidneys all day long. Since all those biological ‘programs’ are firmly in place, its your job to give your Unconscious Mind other instructions to help you achieve your goals in life, and get what you want. When utilised with focus and intent, your Unconscious Mind is your greatest asset in getting what you want.
Make no mistake, at this very moment, your Unconscious Mind is working on some kind of instruction it received at one time or another. The question is, if you haven’t intentionally given your UM anything to focus on and work towards, then who on earth has??
One thing that’s common for people who don’t set clearly defined goals is that they find themselves spending their time working on helping other people do things that they need, rather than spending time on their own goals.
Have you ever known someone who always seems to get what they want? Like you go to a restaurant, and the food you order is not quite right. You don’t feel comfortable asking for refund on your food, but your friend does it no problem. Not only that, but the server actually leaves the conversation is a good mood…Or you want an upgrade on your plane tickets but you never seem to get them, and said friend seems to talk about nothing but free upgrades every time she travels. Or, better yet, somehow in conversations with this person, you always end up being ‘talked into’ helping her with something she needs, while you have never asked once for her help. Does this sound familiar?
Usually, these people are regarded as kind of pushy…but actually they are very very good at tasking their UM to help them get what they want, and their Unconscious Minds are just finding the path of least resistance to getting their goals. If you’re the one who hasn’t given yourself something to do and focus on, you will probably find yourself being ‘tasked’ to help other’s succeed.
This doesn’t only happen between people. This is happening all the time. What do you think the agenda of, say, Coca Cola is? Or Nike? or Apple? They want you to spend your money on their products. They spend billions of dollars each year researching and carrying out ad campaigns to subtly suggest to you that you need to buy their products. This is another example of you being tasked to do something passively.
If you don’t have anything for your UM to do, it will find something to do! This kind of goes along with the famous personal development quote “If you don’t build your own dream you will eventually be paid to help someone else build theirs.”
This is why it’s imperative to ask yourself what you want. What you want out of every area of your life. Its imperative that you set goals in an effective way (the SMART goal setting system in Time Line Therapy® is my favourite), and then focus and work towards those goals enthusiastically until they are reached.
This is the role of the Conscious Mind: To give your Unconscious Mind clear instructions of what you want. The Conscious Mind is the goal setter (the instructor), and the Unconscious Mind is the goal-getter (the crew).
Your Unconscious Mind is your greatest asset when it comes to achieving your goals. Learn to unlock to true potential of you Unconscious Mind by consciously deciding what you want.
